Avenged Sevenfold - Nightmare
The loss of a member, especially one with such a great talent, is always going to be a difficult thing to deal with. After the passing of Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan last year, there may have been the question of whether Avenged Sevenfold would continue. Nightmare demonstrates why we should be glad they have, this being their best album yet. The riffs are fiery, with Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance on top form as always, kicking out some of their best solos on tracks like 'Welcome to the Family'. In addition, M Shadow's vocals seemed to have matured into a distinct tone, losing that sometimes whiney feel they had on City Of Evil. While this album is quite dark in general, it's certainly a triumph for the band. Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy does a mighty fine job of translating The Rev's drum parts, and Nightmare proves to be a worthy tribute to their fallen brother.
