Annie - Anniemal (Album Sampler)
Perhaps one of the most interesting musical trends of the past couple of years is the number of fine acts coming out of Norway. Think Kings of Convenience, Royksopp and the criminally ignored Magnet. Now you can add to that list Annie, perhaps best described as the Scandanavian Kylie.
With the release of the single Chewing Gum on September 13th, she may just become a recognisable star here in the UK. For this track, Annie's recruited the help of producer Richard X (Sugababes' Freak Like Me), who brings his trademark squidgy basslines and synths to the proceedings. It is indeed perfect pop.
That said, Heartbeat, No Easy Love and the Madonna-sampling Greatest Hit (which actually dates back to 1999) are better vehicles for Annie's voice. These songs are more classy, less trashy, due in part to lighter production; the good clean air and fjords are almost tangible in her vocal tones.
Out of the five songs here, only It's Too Late, an ill-advised attempt at twitchy R&B, drops the ball. If that's Annie herself performing a sort of semi-rap, someone ought to take her aside and have a kind and quiet word.
Annie - on the evidence of this sampler - has everything a pop star should need, with sophistication and (judging by the Chewing Gum video) a great ass to boot. No need to watch that next series of Pop Idol then.
Chewing Gum and Greatest Hit can be streamed from Annie's website.
