The Black Keys - Brothers

Tremendous. You forget just how much fun the Ohio duo can be. Six albums in, Brothers is as explosive and driven as their debut. Dan Auerbach (vocals, guitar) and Patrick Carney (drums) belie any notion that in 2010 duos and beard wearers are an obstacle to invention and individuality. ‘Next Girl’, a delta thrum that peddles a pure strain of ‘Led Zeppelin II’, ponders love gone wrong with spiked reflection (“My next girl … will be nothing like my ex girl.”) The likes of ‘She’s Long Gone’ and ‘The Only One’, all Farfisa groove and falsetto, get all radio-friendly just in case the playlisters start to find it all a bit too down and dirty. ‘Never Give You Up’ quivers with real soul love, like it spent the holidays in the Stax vault. A high spot. If Brothers sits back in the second half and relaxes into something altogether more groove-led, the consistently strong song-writing retains interest. All in all, this collection gives every indication this invigorating pairing have an eye or four on the long term.
