múm - Dusk Log
The Dusk Log EP consists of one track from the album Summer Make Good (Will The Summer Make Good For All Of Our Sins?) and three brand new compositions. Needless to say, this being Iceland's múm, it's all very weird.
Dusk Log itself is a Boards of Canada style blend of slow beats, basic electronica and folksy instrumentation. It aims to be uplifting, and is indeed the most 'solid' thing here, but that's not really where múm's strengths lie. The rest is more delicate (perhaps barely qualifying as electronica) and intriguing, mainly thanks to Kristín Anna Valtysdóttir's childlike vocals. This Nothing In The Faraway soothes, but Will The Summer Make Good For All Of Our Sins? is intangibly creepy, strongly reminding me of the soundtrack to some horror film (although exactly which one I can't remember). Rounding off the EP in abstract, incidental fashion is Boots Of Fog.
Múm are not for those seeking pop thrills. However, anyone willing to give their undivided attention to this haunting and exquisitely textured music should be well rewarded.
