Whiskey Myers - Early Morning Shakes

Sometimes it feels as if Southern rock is still basking in its 70s heyday despite Drive-by Truckers making a decent fist of bringing it into the modern age. Still, everything leads back to those days of Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers and Georgia’s Whiskey Myers have more in common than most with those big haired, flare trousered brethren. Their 2011 breakthrough album was the genre at its proudest and fine though that record was, they’ve dialled the rock up to eleven on Early Morning Shakes. Bare-chested riffage is the order of the day.

“I’m a bad man,” screams frontman Cody Cannon on ‘Headstone’ and the amount of booze discussed seems to back up that claim, although ‘Lightening’ is a more honest treatise on the demon drink than the usual rose tinted country view. If ‘Hard Row To Hoe’ gets too close to Led Zeppelin’s ‘Heartbreaker’ riff for comfort, the band show themselves in a better light with their nuts-out guitar work on the title track and ‘Need A Little Time Off For Bad Behaviour’. Dialling down their previous reliance on easy going country melodies has given the quintet a new edge; Cannon’s raspy growl grounds their evolving sound dead centre on the road to rock, and it’s a path that sees them playing harder and faster than ever.
