Truth - Puppets

Those concerned that the mainstream is assimilating dubstep might take some comfort in the debut album from New Zealanders Truth. Puppets is essentially the genre at (or close to) its most unlovable; no sugar coated vocals on these tracks. There are the expected monster-bassline dancefloor numbers - of which 'Juno' and 'Under Current' are the standouts - but also occasional excursions into more chilled territory: 'Don’t Explain' goes some way to recreating the atmosphere of 90s trip-hop and 'Indigo Mind' is an attempt at putting the dub back in dubstep. Not bad to dip into but, such is the commitment to uneasy listening, only aficionados are likely to manage the whole in one sitting.
