The Pack A.D. - We Kill Computers

Straight-up garage-rock ferocity, that’s what this is. We Kill Computers is the new record from Canadian duo The Pack A.D. and it’s a back-to-basics trawl through grubby riffs and crashing percussion. Sounding like The White Stripes fronted by Cat Power, tracks like opener ‘Deer’ and ‘Big Anvil’ are attitude filled and ready to leap for the jugular. But there are pop moments too in the shape of the groove-laden ‘Crazy’ and the foot-tapping ‘K-Stomp’, showing a dynamic side to their simple drum/guitar combo. Their greatest asset however is vocalist Becky Black, her passionate yelps and classic rock & roll voice giving proceedings an excitement that too few duos ever muster. This comes through particularly well on bluesy numbers like ‘The Slow Down’ where her vocals wail over bent chords and cymbal splashes. An invigorating and thrilling record that will inevitably sound even better live.
