The Herbaliser - Herbal Tonic

The clue is in the name. The Herbaliser (London duo, Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba) dabble in the sort of music that would make the perfect musical backdrop in an Amsterdam coffeeshop - perhaps not hugely surprising from a Ninja Tune act. (Although they left the label in 2005, after ten year's service). These fifteen tracks represent a 'best of' and are an agreeable, mostly laidback mix of turntablism, rapping, jazz and soundtrack-type shennanigans. 'Starlight' (lounge hip-hop, featuring an early, impressive appearance from Roots Manuva) and 'Nah' Mean Nah'm Sayin'' (in which funky horns punctuate Jean Grae's ultra-sassy rap) are proof of their ability with a guest vocalist, while 'The Sensual Woman', a porny pastiche rude both lyrically and musically, best embodies their humourous streak.
