The Doobie Brothers - Southbound

Just as young Taylor Swift exits the world of country music, old hands The Doobie Brothers return with a Nashville focus to give a face-lift to their old tunes. Their ever changing line-up (take a look at their Wikipedia page for proof) is bolstered by familiar face Michael McDonald and an array of the great and good of modern country music. The result? Southbound is a semi-successful melding of their well-known pop-soul sound with the twang and slide of Nashville.

It’s not all good, with The Doobies only partially meeting the challenge of adding a different twist while not losing what made the songs popular first time round. On the opening track ‘Black Water’ it seems everything is spot on: the Zac Brown Band add twang and rock out impressively. But the rest of the tracks, headed by their three monster hits, don’t do nearly enough new: Blake Shelton adds little to ‘Listen To The Music’, the returning McDonald booms out the chorus of ‘What A Fool’ drowning out Sara Evans somewhat, and ‘Long Train Runnin’’ is the same as it ever was. As an exercise in remaking their own tunes it's solid, bringing modern production and a newly updated sound. Less successful though is the country slant which is there in spirit and voice rather than soul.
