The Black Angels - Clear Lake Forest

Austin, Texas band The Black Angels return after 2013's Indigo Meadow with this rather nifty seven-tracker, Clear Lake Forest. Still the same brand of neo-psychedelic pop, yet the songs (the excellent be-bop of 'Tired Eyes', moody and iridescent 'Diamond Eyes', and show-stopper 'An Occurrence At 4507 South Third Street') bristle with a vitality not seen since 2010's spectacular Phosphene Dream.

There are a couple of clunky bits: 'Sunday Evening' plods along without going anywhere in particular, and the lacklustre 'The Executioner' is a dead weight that drags the second half of the EP down. Yet the good outweighs the bad overall. Always worth a listen, The Black Angels know how to serve up some first rate indie-pop. They don't always get it right all of the time, but boy when they do, it's first class.
