Marconi Union - A Lost Connection
This remastered version of a previously digital-only release by Manchester's Marconi Union owes a great deal to modern ambient pioneers such as Christian Fennesz and Oren Ambarchi. A Lost Connection is full of processed guitars, subtle pops and clicks and a melancholic atmosphere which at the best of times keeps the listener fascinated with its intricacies, and at the worst seems a little on the dull side. On the whole though, this does contain some well crafted pieces of electronic music. 'Endless Winter' takes frosty sheets of synths and lays them over a minimal, repetitive beat while almost string-like sounds rise and fall. The beautiful sparse landscape of 'Hinterland' uses echoing guitar melodies and throbbing percussion to great effect, and the mournful piano of 'Transient' brings things to a quiet close, wherein the listener is only left with silence. An altogether organic and haunting experience.
