Manna - Songs Of Hope and Desire

Hailing from Paris, with parents from both France and Algeria, it's difficult to anticipate just how Manna will sound. But as the driving bass and guitar chords that open 'Truth Song' demonstrate, this young lady is very much in the alt-rock camp inhabited by Cat Power and PJ Harvey. There's no doubt that this Helsinki-residing singer has a brilliant voice, her husky, powerful tones full of attitude and melody as on tracks like 'Holy Dirty Game' and 'Sad Little Bird', the latter aided by a bit of piano and a great pop sensibility. Songs of Hope & Desire is full of dirty post-punk guitar, and a bluesy stomp which is a joy to listen to. While this may not be the most unique sounding album in the world, it is a damn fine record with hooks galore and a wonderful garage-rock feel.
