Darkstarr - They Live By The Night

X-Press 2's Ashley Beedle and NYC DJ, Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy, take a disc each for what is definitely not your standard dance mix album. They Live By The Night covers old and new, soul, funk, jazz, disco and house. The only thing it doesn't 'do' is play it safe. There's an overarching air of psychedelia (partly due to the odd juxtaposing of styles) and a sense that someone's thumbing through a tatty, obscure but well loved record collection. Perhaps best are Mavis' 'Revolution' (an old skool-sounding disco-soul tune, featuring the unmistakable voice of Candi Staton), The KDMS' 'Never Stop Believing' (Nicky Siano Jaguar Remix) (a fine house track) and Supernova's 'Sweet Disco Music' (dreamy electronica). For the open-minded, They Live By The Night is worth a run through, at least once.
