Danielle Spencer - Calling All Magicians

It's taken Danielle Spencer almost a decade to release her second album (her first release in the UK), and the clichéd cover tells you absolutely everything you need to know. It's a caricature of Spencer, looking vaguely gothic, playing her piano in the mist. You guessed it - she sounds a bit like Kate Bush, a bit like Regina Spektor, and while it's true that she's got a way with a pop hook and an interesting almost spoken vocal style, there's nothing on here that feels special. The single, 'On Your Side' is the best stab, with an upbeat chorus. It's a perfectly fine record, but with nothing to distinguish it from an already crowded field, it's hard to imagine it finding an audience. Still, she can take heart that it's better than the music made by her husband, Russell Crowe.
