Caitlin Rose - Dead Flowers

Caitlin Rose is a country singer. Not your Shania Twain country, either. We're talking your proper twangy, Loretta Lynn country. As if to underline this, her songs deal with proper country subjects too: teenage pregnancy, drinking and - less conventionally - on 'Gorilla Man', monkey love. It's the sense of humor and tongue-in-cheek nature of songs like this last number that set Rose apart and ensures that she doesn't just descend into pastiche of the country classics. When she's not realising that she's an "ugly gorilla bride to be", she's delivering a sparse, pedal steel drenched cover of 'Dead Flowers'. If country's your bag, she should definitely be on your radar in 2010.
