Twitter to launch music service?

The net is aflame with speculation that Twitter is preparing to launch a music service after confirmation it had bought music app We Are Hunted for an undisclosed fee. A post on We Are Hunted’s website yesterday (11 April) said the business “will continue to create services that will delight you, as part of the Twitter team” but offered no further detail. An iOS app, dubbed Twitter Music, is rumoured to launch as early as this weekend.

The news came after American Idol host Ryan Seacrest tweeted about “playing with @twitter’s new music app (yes it’s real!)”. According to Seacrest the app highlights trending acts as well as up-and-coming acts based on users’ preferences. The post was retweeted by @TwitterMusic, which is thought to be the service's official account. In addition, it supposedly pulls recommendations based on Twitter followers, emerging artists and from tracks tagged with the #NowPlaying hashtag.

We need your help

Running a website like The Digital Fix - especially one with over 20 years of content and an active community - costs lots of money and we need your help. As advertising income for independent sites continues to contract we are looking at other ways of supporting the site hosting and paying for content.

You can help us by using the links on The Digital Fix to buy your films, games and music and we ask that you try to avoid blocking our ads if you can. You can also help directly for just a few pennies per day via our Patreon - and you can even pay to have ads removed from the site entirely.
