LG TVs in data collection concerns

Here's a worrying discovery - LG Smart TVs are apparently configured to report usage data back to LG for advertising purposes. However, this isn't the worst of it, in that same data they also seem to be gathering information on files on any attached storage. If you have a USB drive attached, at the very least the TV is attempting to report back filenames; both individually and on a folder-by-folder basis.

Right now the URL that LG TVs are attempting to contact isn't valid, but this could be changed at any time - allowing LG to know WHAT you're watching and what files you have on your system. There is apparently a setting to disable this, but at present it has no affect on the TV behaviour and the data is transmitted unencrypted anyway.

We need your help

Running a website like The Digital Fix - especially one with over 20 years of content and an active community - costs lots of money and we need your help. As advertising income for independent sites continues to contract we are looking at other ways of supporting the site hosting and paying for content.

You can help us by using the links on The Digital Fix to buy your films, games and music and we ask that you try to avoid blocking our ads if you can. You can also help directly for just a few pennies per day via our Patreon - and you can even pay to have ads removed from the site entirely.
