Hyundai viral ad offends

Who would think a car ad showing an attempted suicide would be a good idea? Anyone? Of course not, yet it seems Hyundai staff and their ad agency, Innoccean, obviously considered it given the video that appeared on YouTube earlier this week. We won't link to it in order to avoid increasing the video's exposure, but you can view it at this URL if you really want to see just how tasteless and offensive it is -

How could anyone involved in the ad's concept, direction or shooting have been happy with what they were doing? Someone somewhere must have understood the affect that such a promotion could have on those who have been unfortunate enough to lose loved ones in this way?

Twitter user, Holly Brockwell highlighted the ad earlier today and has since written this heartbreaking blog post on the subject. Further more, have a read of Ben Goldacre's blog post which discusses how this kind of vile stunt can actually put more lives at risk.

Hyundai have apparently commented on the ad claiming it was never supposed to see the light of day, but for it to have got as far along the production process as this is enough to raise huge red flags for us. Not for The Guardian though who seem think it's not only an acceptable subject, but one that deserves to be highlighted as one of their 'ads of the week'.

We need your help

Running a website like The Digital Fix - especially one with over 20 years of content and an active community - costs lots of money and we need your help. As advertising income for independent sites continues to contract we are looking at other ways of supporting the site hosting and paying for content.

You can help us by using the links on The Digital Fix to buy your films, games and music and we ask that you try to avoid blocking our ads if you can. You can also help directly for just a few pennies per day via our Patreon - and you can even pay to have ads removed from the site entirely.
