Facebook bans racist hate group Britain First
It's been a long time in coming, but today Facebook have finally done the right thing and have banned Britain First, the right-wing religious hate group from the site. Not only are the group banned, but their pages have been deleted.
Britain First grew in popularity partly through the sharing of patriotic memes in an attempt to attract followers who were unaware of the group's anti-muslim, anti-immigration stance.
I lost count of the number of times I saw a doddery old relative sharing a Britain First meme 'in support of our troops' or some other fake patriotism despite them having no knowledge of the group themselves and what they stood for. Britain First's social rise is very much evidence that indiscriminate sharing of viral posts is a very bad thing.
With Facebook's latest action against the group we now have some hope that social networks are living up to their responsibility in stopping hate speech and extremism without the old fall back of allowing 'free speech'.
