"That coffee machine spoke to me on a level nobody else ever has" Idle chit-chat with Tom Neenan
Hey Tom, how the devil are you?
I’m great thanks. How are you?
I am. Good. So, what have you been up to today?
It's 8:30 am. So… this.
Describe your comedy style.
Self-deprecating enough to slightly cringe at the idea of describing my comedy style.
Tell us what you can about your show for the Fringe, It’s Always Infinity, in two sentences?
It’s a show within a show bout a fake drama which befell me. It tackles subjects like toxic masculinity through the prism of me being a dick.
It sounds like a bit of a departure for you, are you taking some spare pairs of underpants for the nerves?
I am wearing two pairs of underpants but you’ll have to see the show to find out why.
You’re there soon, how many times have you been, and what’s your best memory?
This is my tenth Fringe. I love it. But the best memories are always arriving at the train station looking forward to the month and arriving a month later looking forward to seeing your own bed again.
What do you do when you’re at the Fringe?
Watch other people’s shows, eat and panic.
For people who haven’t seen it, tell us about The Mash Report.
It’s a topical satire show perfect for the era of fake news. We take a deeper look at the stories behind the headlines and make up some headlines of our own. I write for it and very occasionally muscle my way on camera.
What’s going on with your website, pretty to-the-point isn’t it?
I’m not good at websites. I basically want something to tell people where I’m performing and who I am. I don’t have a page dedicated to my ‘musings’.
You’re on Twitter a fair amount, but the question is, social media… bringing people closer together or destroying civilisation?
Both. But it’s important to remember people said the same thing about television.
Are you still sad about the coffee machine?
That coffee machine spoke to me on a level nobody else ever has. Please include a picture with this otherwise I will sound insane.
When was the last time someone told you a joke or anecdote that you genuinely found funny?
I spend a lot of time in writers rooms with really funny people so fortunately it happens all the time, but most of it is unrepeatable.
Where’s the weirdest place you’ve gigged?
I’ve gigged in a few castles. That’s always fun.
What other comedian is worth checking out?
Just one? There are so many. Too many to name here because I’ll miss someone out and feel terrible.
What’s the question we should have asked you today but haven’t?
When and where is my show on? 15:45, Underbelly, Bristo Square.
Finally, how do you take your coffee?
With my name spelled incorrectly on the side.
Tom is performing It’s Always Infinity at the Underbelly from 1st August – 26th August, 15:45, tickets available now.
If you want to find out more about Tom visit his retro-cool, rat pack-y website, or you can follow him on Twitter.
