"Steff decided we should get really drunk and do a gig just to experience it" Idle chit-chat with Susan Riddell
Hey Susan, how are you today?
Wee bit tired as always, but good!
What have you been up to today?
Just had an under ripe banana from Tesco. Was boggin. I’m just preparing for my show and another charity gig for breast cancer called EndinBra at 6.45pm in Espionage tonight.
And where are you right now?
Leith. I really, really like Leith.
So, gotta check obvs, how the hell have your first shows been?
We’ve had two shows so far and both have been really busy and great!
Tell us what you can about your show for the Fringe, ‘2 For Joy’, in two sentences?
'2 for Joy' is me and my pal, Steff Todd, doing stand up comedy at the Hanover Tap at 5pm every day. Steff does impressions and one-liners and I just talk pish for half an hour and most importantly the venue has nice toilets.
You don’t seem to have a website, which for 2010 is a bit weird. Anyhow, tell us about you. In the style of a haiku.
I’m very lazy
Everything just gets in the
way of lying down.
Here’s another for free:
I had to Google
Haikus and I’m still not sure
I’m doing it right
You mentioned you're doing your show with Steff Todd, why did you choose Steff?
Steff and I both did the CKP Lunchtime Special together last year and we both got signed by the same agent at Avalon so taking the next step together made sense. I’m really happy I’ve got my buddy with me again!
Describe your comedy style.
You’ve done loads of things, some TV, some newspaper columns, live gigs etc, what’s been your favourite comedy experience so far?
My favourite gig ever was at Whistlebinkies last year. I don’t drink before I go on stage but me and Steff decided we should get really drunk and do a gig just to experience it. I went on stage and hit the giggles for about ten minutes. I admitted I was pished and kept trying to compose myself but couldn’t. The audience were in stitches. People were shaking my hand on the way out saying it was the funniest thing they’d seen at the Fringe. A few people genuinely asked me if it was a character act. I thought well that’s it, I’m going to have to start drinking heavily before I go on stage. I tried it shortly after and died on my arse, which was a bit of a relief for my liver.
What makes you laugh most in life?
Three things: my nieces and nephews, my dog and Bah-reg-nick (if you know, you know).
On a scale of 1 to 10 how boring are the Q&A’s to do now? You must have done loads?
Probably not as boring as it is for you to read this.
There’s a lot of talk about female comedians on TV and comedy bills, what’s your experience of being a women in the comedy world?
It’s fine because things are changing. It’s a good time for women in comedy.
Tell us a charity we should support. And why.
The Euan McDonald Centre which researches MND. My friend would have been 37 this week but unfortunately he was diagnosed with this MND and sadly it took hold very quickly.
When was the last time you were starstruck?
I don’t get starstruck anymore but when I was about 19 and working as a beauty therapist in the Hilton, we got told S Club 7 were coming to get their nails done. I don’t know why but I was a nervous wreck. They never turned up in the end but that’s probably the only time I’ve felt starstruck.
What other comedian(s) is/are worth checking out?
My brilliant friend Rachel Jackson. She’s not at the Fringe this year but she’s always up to something. Lynn Koplitz Netflix special Hormonal Beast and I love Jen Kirkman.
What’s the question we should have asked you today but haven’t?
Do you think it’s time that a female-led Scottish sitcom and/or sketch show was commissioned considering there hasn’t been one on our screens since the Karen Dunbar sketch show?
Finally, how do you take your coffee?
Very strong with full fat milk. I hate green milk in coffee. Also, I hate that coffee everyone is into just now that tastes a bit fruity.
You can catch Susan's show (with Steff) at the Fringe at The Hanover Tap (at The Wee Tap) every day at 5pm. Tickets are on sale now.
To follow Susan's goings on she's got that Twitter thing.
