"Dogs bollocks don't rhyme and there's nothing mythical" Idle chit-chat with Ismo

Hey Ismo, how the heck are you?

I'm very well thank you. Taking some time off before the long grind of August. A rare thing for me these days off.

Quick check, did any of my Brit-isms confuse you in that opening question? Heck maybe?

Not at all, I like isms, ism is actually very close to my name. I only like those types of isms, not ideological ones that much. Heck is fine, I prefer hell myself though.

So what have you been up to today?

I've been on a holiday for a few days, so not much. I took a walk with my wife and I think I had an idea or two for new jokes. Then I answered to some questions by email, or actually I'm doing it now, as we speak!

Uniquely amongst comedians you have a really good website. Still, tell me about you.

Thanks! It's brand new, the site I mean. I'm almost forty.

Describe your comedy style.

Deep thinking and complicated analysis wrapped in a casual familiar-to-all observational out-pointing and deducting. I want to have new ideas in every bit and try to always be very mindful of the delivery. Sometimes just silly.

Tell us about your show for the Fringe, ‘Worlds Apart’, in two sentences?

I'm really carefully taking apart a few essential English words and phrases - things I'm sure native speakers don't even notice. Also contains other fine-tuned observations of mainly humans.

And how are the work in progress shows going?

Good. I think the set has been mostly ready for a while now!

I loved your skit on vegans, but what’s your favourite sausage?

There's perfect ones for every occasion. I haven't had UK ones in a while now, so looking forward.

What are Finnish sausages like?

Bigger and milder-tasting than UK ones. Need a lot of mustard. Never eaten as breakfast, more in campfire, beer & sauna type of situations.

I see you’re touring Finland in October, If I was going to come to a show, which is nicest place to visit that you’re playing?

You should definitely come to the Oct 24th show in Turku - it's in English! (the others are in Finnish...) It's a nice city too and they make the best blue cheese there.

Genuinely, what’s the stupidest British phrase that you’ve heard, the one that makes no sense.

Definitely "dogs bollocks". I get "bee's knees" - it rhymes and the knees of a bee are kind of mythical, not visible to the naked eye at least. Dogs bollocks don't rhyme and there's nothing mythical, very concrete and plain unpleasant to all senses.

Do you think you’ll ever run out of material, or are the British and American languages just that stupid/interesting?

I'm not concerned, there's plenty of stuff there to be found I'm sure. It seems the English language made up in a hurry. Plus I never limited myself to only mining the language! Even the sky is not the limit, since I have jokes about space too.

What other comedian is worth checking out?

I'm afraid to recommend comedians, since they all seem to turn out to be terrible people after that. I hope it doesn't happen to Doug Stanhope too, I've been liking him a lot.

What’s the question we should have asked you today but haven’t?

This one. No, wait.. it's the other way around! This is the one you weren't supposed to ask but asked anyway.

If people can’t make it to Edinburgh are you heading back to the UK for shows at any point?

I'm trying to setup a few days in Oct-Nov time, but sure yet. Be sure to check out the beautiful website!

Finally, how do you take your coffee? (Or other warm/hot beverage)

With cream, preferably heavy cream or double cream, if there is a triple cream, then that! No skimmed milk please. I can also do espresso, but it has to be perfect not a bitter half-ass one. Or is it half-arse?

You can see Ismo's show, 'Words Apart', at the Pleasance Dome every day the Fringe is on at 8:20pm. Tickets are on sale now.
