Capaldi surprises audiences in Liverpool
More on Doctor Who
International TV buyers got a surprise last night at BBC Worldwide's Showcase event as the Twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi burst from the TARDIS to the delight of the audience.
One of a string of appearances from leading British television talent, Capaldi's appearance in his new costume comes weeks after he commenced filming for Doctor Who's eighth series, due to be broadcast in the Autumn.
Speaking to host Graham Norton, Capaldi commented: "As a lifetime follower of the show, I'm delighted to see its global success. And I'm looking forward to sharing with the world the very exciting journey the new series is taking us on."
Capaldi's surprise appearance came mere hours after the announcement of a new recurring character for the series in the form of Danny Pink, played by Samuel Anderson (The History Boys).
Anderson will play a colleague of Jenna Coleman's Clara Oswald at Coal Hill School, a name familiar to long term Doctor Who fans. The duo will be reminiscent of Ian (William Russell) and Barbara (Jacqueline Hill), two other teachers from Coal Hill School who travelled with First Doctor William Hartnell.
Speaking on his casting Anderson commented: "Doctor Who is a quintessential part of British culture and I can't believe I'm part of it. It's an honour to be able to work alongside Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman and I can't wait to show people how my character becomes involved with such a fantastic duo!"
Filming recently began on Episodes 4 and 5 of the new series with the as-yet-untitled Episode 4 co-starring Robert Goodman (Gangs of New York, Game of Thrones) and episode 5 co-starring Jonathan Bailey (Broadchurch, Groove High), and Pippa Bennett-Warner (The Smoke, Death in Paradise).
Doctor Who returns in the autumn.
