A baby girl with HIV cured?
Scientists in the US are claiming that a girl born two and a half years ago has been cured. The toddler from Mississippi may be only the second person to overcome the illness which is a precursor to the even more serious AIDS.
Reports suggest the girl has been off medication for over a year and recent tests show only lingering genetic traces of the virus. While there is no guarantee the child will remain healthy, at present it appears that she is no longer at any real risk.
Doctors gave the toddler a stronger and more aggressive treatment than they would usually administer and this could be a reason for the remarkable recovery.
The girl's mother is taking medicine to fight her own HIV infection.
