New Kindles - and the Kindle Fire HD is coming our way!
Amazon have announced their new range of Kindle devices, including TWO new HD versions of the Kindle Fire Android tablet and a brand new 'paper white' front-lit Kindle Touch.
The Kindle Fire HD will come in 7" and 8.9" (in the US only) versions, both will feature high definition 1280x800 screens and will run the Amazon customised version of Android that is targetted at media consumption rather than more generic app use. All variants of the Fire come in 16 and 32GB flavours and start at just £159. The original Kindle Fire is also coming to the UK with an even more impressive £129 price point.
The Kindle Fire HD features a 10-point multitouch screen, an OMAP4470 sits under the hood running at 1.2GHz - Amazon claim this outperforms the Tegra 3 in their benchmarks, but we're unconvinced. PowerVR provides the 3D grunt, but this is more of a media-centric than gaming device so that's not of massive consequence.
At the time of writing the Kindle Paperwhite hasn't been confirmed for a UK release and our US brethren also get a larger 8.9" version of the Fire HD which includes the option LTE support and an amazing $50/year data tariff (although that only provides 250MB/month which at LTE speeds would last all of a couple of minutes!).
So great news - we're getting the new tablet version of the Kindle, but disappointingly it seems we may be left waiting for US demand to drop a little before the Paperwhite comes our way and the larger Kindle Fire isn't coming to UK shores at all...
