It's Gif, not Gif
Small children have been left tearful, migratory birds heading home for the summer have turned tail and stocks tumbled on worldwide markets as Steve Wilhite, the man who invented the Graphics Interchange Format while at CompuServe back in 1987 has revealed we've all been saying 'Gif' wrongly for the past quarter century.
Turns out we should have been saying 'jif'.
“The Oxford English Dictionary accepts both pronunciations,” Wilhite, now retired, told the New York Times. “They are wrong. It is a soft ‘G,’ pronounced ‘jif.’ End of story.”
