The Archos Android GamePad
At just €150, the newly announced Archos GamePad is well priced to go head to head with the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita. The new Android-powered device will bring non-touchscreen controls to the vast array of Android games already available. With a fast growing, CHEAP library of games it won't struggle for software support.
Based around Android 4.0 (ICS), the GamePad adds physical controls that will make playing many Android games far more intuitive, opening them to a new audience. Our only real worry is that we only have a dual-core processor and Mali 400 graphics, a combo that hasn't impressed us on tablets. We would have much preferred a Tegra 3 powered device as that would ensure a decent lifespan. We're concerned that the 7inch GamePad may be a little underpowered in the medium term, especially as we're now seeing Tegra 3-only games that won't run on anything less powerful.
We're also worried that the 7inch form factor may actually be TOO big to be comfortable in this configuration and we'd much prefer to see something a little more compact and portable. The GamePad is a great concept and if executed well could signal the end of the more restricted proprietary platforms.
