It may sound crazy - it's 2014 and yet the gutter-life of the internet seem unable to take part in reasonable debate, instead bombarding anyone with whom they disagree with death threats. It seems to happen most weeks and this has been no different.
This time the target is Anita Sarkeesian, whose series of Tropes vs. Women in Games has gathered much in the way of agreement AND disagreement. Her most recent instalment resulted in her having to leave her home thanks to threats of rape and murder against her and her family.
Some very scary threats have just been made against me and my family. Contacting authorities now.— Feminist Frequency (@femfreq) August 27, 2014
Gaming is often looked down on as an artform, and its no wonder when the maturity of many gamers means they're unable to contain themselves hurling threats of violence and every kind if 'ism' under the sun. We need to stand up to this as a community - it really isn't acceptable.
We urge you to watch Anita's videos. She makes valid points that encourage inclusivity and equality in gaming and that is something we should all be keen to embrace. None of us want our favourite hobby tarnished by the actions we've seen in the last few weeks.
