The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets Review

Ever since I saw the reveal trailer for The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets I was smitten. I love PSVR, I adore cute animals and I enjoy cutesy cartoony video games. All these ingredients can only produce something I will surely enjoy. This VR experience is a sure-fire hit, right?

The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets is a tale of loss and a story of reconnection told from the viewpoint of your grandfather. After the touching loss of your grandmother, he relives your childhood memories through small puzzle-filled memories and its beautiful. The story is touching and has a slightly sad narrative, luckily, its presentation is cute, bright and playful.

Yes, you can push the dog on the swing. You can interact with almost everything.

You can interact with almost everything in each stage, from picking items up to opening doors. Each level is extremely interactive and an absolute joy to explore and solve its mysteries. From throwing snowballs, pressing switches and performing magic tricks, each stage is unique, entertaining and a pleasure to be part of in VR.

You are tasked in each of the games five zones to solve small puzzles and locate the missing pets. These pets range from rabbits to turtles and even dinosaurs, who has a pet dinosaur? They are all very adorable and a joy to find in each well-designed zone. There are normally clues dotted around to help with the puzzles but nothing is too taxing or difficult in any way.

The levels are beautiful and so well designed.

Interacting with the environment is how you will solve most of the game's riddles. Whether it be finding items to activate parts of the level or following a brief clue within the level itself, the puzzles are accessible but pleasant. My boys, who are 10 and 6, both loved it and had no issues working out what to do. The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets is definitely a game the whole family can play and enjoy together.

Everything is just so relaxing, joyous and I played the whole game in one sitting with a constant grin on my face. I was so determined to find all the hidden pocket money and lost pets in each stage the time just flew by. The game is quite short, even when I went trophy hunting I was done in under a few hours. It is great while it lasts though.

I adore the art style of this game, everything is so clear, bold and bright.

The VR implementation is spot on, I had zero issues with tracking, camera positioning or anything. It was just a pure joy to play with zero VR 'messiness' and the developers need to be credited for that. The game is perfectly suited to VR and controls very well to boot. It is simple, well made and I had zero bugs, issues or glitches. Absolutely brilliant.

The presentation of The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets is amazing. Everything is so clear, chunky, bright and well modelled. The levels are so well designed and the soundtrack is tranquil and so pleasant on the ears. The music is melodically charming and really suits the rest fo the game perfectly. I did not want the game to end when it did, I wanted more.

Pros

  • Beautiful art style and presentation.
  • Fun, well designed levels and puzzles.
  • Nice Soundtrack.
  • Touching Story.

Cons

  • Very short for the price, even when going for 100%.

Overall

The only thing that marred this fun VR romp, in my opinion, is the length of the game. I would have liked a few more levels to explore and more animals to find. What is there though is well made, beautiful and fun to play. At the end of the day, that is what is important, I had a great time playing it and so did my family.
