The Last of Us Part 2 Release Date, MediEvil Demo, Death Stranding PS4 Pro and more from the September 2019 State of Play

Another State of Play, Sony’s Direct-esque video series, has wrapped up today and within it was a nice little collection of games to look forward to between now and early 2020, along with a few surprises. Let’s start with the big one!

The Last of Us Part 2 Gets a Release Date

The game that every Playstation fan has been dying to get their hands on has finally received a release date. Naughty Dog’s take on a post-apocalyptic survival adventure will be gracing PS4s everywhere come February 21st, 2020. This gives players ample time to enjoy it before Final Fantasy VII Remake lands. Sony gave us more insight into the gameplay of The Last of Us Part 2 via a trailer. Terrifying horrors, snowy trailers on horseback, and nature-covered cities seem to be just what the doctor ordered. We can’t wait!

To whet our appetites while we wait, The Last of Us Remastered will be free for PS Plus members from October (paired with MLB The Show 19), perfect for people like me who haven’t had the chance to play the original game yet.

MediEvil Demo Out Now

Sir Dan’s remade adventure is just around the corner but we don’t have to wait before we get a taste of the whacky ghouly action. MediEvil’s demo hits the PSN store today and there is an incentive for playing it in the form of unlocking Dan’s Helmet in the full game when it releases October 25th.

Civilisation VI Comes to Playstation 4

The classic Sid Meier historical strategy game that spans across all stages of human society’s development is coming to Playstation 4 (and apparently Xbox One) on November 22nd this year. A separate expansion bundle will package together Rise & Fall and Gathering Storm and will retail alongside the main Civilisation VI game. Playstation owners also get some bonus free content with Indonesia scenario packs and characters.

Limited Edition Death Stranding PS4 Pro Bundle

Death Stranding, the game nobody yet seems to know what it’s about – besides Hideo Kojima himself – will be launching alongside a limited edition PS4 Pro bundle. This will include a white PS4 Pro console with the now-familiar Death Stranding…strands and a branded yellow Dual Shock 4.

L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files is Out Now and more PSVR Love

PSVR owners got some titles to look forward to, starting with L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files. Experience old-timey interrogations, car chases, bank robberies, and some good ol’ fashioned sleuthing in full VR. Best of all is you don’t even have to wait as the VR spin-off to the noir detective action-adventure lands today.

PSVR owners also have plenty of new titles to look forward to between now and early 2020 including colosseum-style horde mode game Gorn, post-apocalyptic survival shooter After the Fall, stealth action shooter Espire1: VR Operative and more.

The Rest

The September 2019 State of Play had a whole slew of fun, colorful, and quirky games to look forward to.

  • December 2019 sees the release of Wattam, a colorful wacky sandbox adventure from the creator of Katamari Damacy, where friendship and physics-based puzzle-solving can be enjoyed by all ages in both solo and co-op play.
  • Escape hell by exploiting one of Satan’s loopholes by out-partying him in Afterparty when it launches October 29th
  • Go on a dream-like epic post-death adventure in Arise: A Simple Story which is coming soon.

There may be no Batman-related announcement as was originally speculated but one thing is clear: Sony and the Playstation brand are definitely trying to step it up with their State of Play presentations. There’s still a long way to go before perfecting the formula as Nintendo has done with their Directs but there is an evident improvement in both quality and announcements this time around.
