Persona 5's Joker and Version 3.0 Update hit Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tomorrow

Platforms: Nintendo Switch

It's been quite a week with Mark Cerny breaking the silence with details on Sony's next console, Xbox One All Digital getting a release date, and Capcom announcing something bizarre. Now, Nintendo wants a piece of the action in a big way with details on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Version 3.0 Update.

He's here to take our hearts! Joker from Persona 5 is being released on April 18th (April 17th in the US) as part of Fighter Pack 1. The leader of the Phantom Thieves wields both his signature dagger and pistol, the latter of which he can fire while dodging. Combined with his cat-like agility, Joker can close the gap fairly quickly to slice and dice his foes into oblivion. Of course, it wouldn't be a Persona character without an actual Persona joining the fray. Persona 5's protagonist has his own special Rebellion gauge which fills up as he takes damage. He can fill it up even faster by using Rebel's Guard to absorb hits, halving the damage he receives and pushing opponents back upon release. Once the gauge is full, Joker summons Arsene to his side. As long as Joker's manifestation of his rebellious nature is around, his damage is increased and his special moves gain new properties.

Fighters Pack 1 also comes with a whole slew of Persona related goodies. Tracks from Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5 will be added to the already massive tracklist in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In addition, the new Mementos stage will also change colour depending on which past Persona title's tracks are being played. For an even greater touch of detail (and to yours truly's absolute delight!), Joker's win screen replicates that from Persona 5, complete with comments from the rest of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. Joker and Fighter Pack 1 will be available at £5.39/$5.99 or as part of the Fighter Pass at £22.49/$24.99. Four more unannounced fighters will be released between now and February 2020.

As if all of that wasn't enough already, Nintendo had more to say regarding the free 3.0 Update and paid DLC. The update will include new Spirits and collectible goodies, as well as a classic mode path for Joker. The two big parts, though, are the heavily rumoured Stage Creator and a Video Editor. Stage Creation allows players to tap into their creativity to make Smash Bros stages of their own which they can share with the rest of the world. Aside from moving objects and new elements, stages will also have two layers so that elaborate and wacky backdrops can be made. Smash Ultimate's Video Editor will allow players to import video replays of matches which can be trimmed and enhanced with transitions and music. Videos can then be shared, viewed, and liked by other Smash Ultimate players. These videos can also be viewed on Smash World via the Switch Online mobile app. Finally, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 3.0 Update also has a bit of paid DLC in the form of Persona inspired costumes for Mii Fighters. I predict Morgana and Teddy hats running wild online.

As with Joker and Fighter Pack 1, the 3.0 Update releases April 17th in the US/18th in the UK. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is shaping up to be an actual ultimate gaming experience packed with every gamer's dream feature under the Sun. Check out our glowing review of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate right here.
