Obsidian Entertainment’s new game is The Outer Worlds - and it looks intriguing

Platforms: PC | Sony PlayStation 4 | Microsoft Xbox One

Legendary developers Obsidian Entertainment, as well as publishers Private Division, announced their newest game at The Game Awards 2018 - The Outer Worlds.

The Outer Worlds is a sci-fi RPG, which tells the story of a lost colonist ship on the far edges of space. While exact plot details are light (as all details are, for that matter), the trailer shows it includes crazy scientists, space mercenaries, and all manner of ugly space creatures.

We also get some brief glimpses of gameplay, with first-person dialogue segments and melee combat showing off the story options presented to the player - a trait beloved by Obsidian fans. We also get shots of space combat, although it could be limited to cutscenes. However, given the game is called The Outer WorldS (emphasis on the plural worlds) there's hopefully going to be a lot of planet hopping.

There are several nods to the Fallout franchise in the marketing for the game, from the nods to the franchise (as The Outer Worlds co-directors Leonard Boyarsky and Tim Cain worked on the original Fallout), to the aesthetic of the trailer. The former has stated The Outer Worlds is intended asf “in-depth single-player RPGs where the player can define their character and play the game any way they choose”, which is again likely a criticism to Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 which fans suggest lacks these traits.

While only time will tell how good The Outer Worlds actually is, Obsidian has a proven track record of great RPG hits, including Fallout: New Vegas and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II.

You can arrive in The Outer Worlds in late 2019 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
