New Wii to lose backwards compatibility

Platforms: Android

The newly redesigned Wii is to lose more than a few millimetres in its facelift. It's being reported that the new console will drop support for Gamecube games and peripherals when the new hardware hits the shelves soon - a real shame given that many Gamecube games are still head and shoulders above their Wii equivalents.

One of the great things about the Wii was support for Gamecube accessories in many games, removing the need to use the Wiimote as a standard controller. Owners of the new Wii will be limited to using the Wii-specific 'classic' controller in the future.

This also doesn't bode well for Wii-U support of Gamecube software and hardware.
