Every Fighting Game Announcement at EVO 2019

EVO Championship is the world’s biggest and most iconic fighting game event with thousands of competitors and spectators flying in yearly from all across the world to be a part of it. It stands to reason that some of the most important fighting game news will be announced at the Las Vegas-based event and this year was surely no different.

Here are the most important announcements made during this year’s EVO Championship.

New Under Night In-Birth Late Version

One of the big surprise picks to be at the EVO stage this year, Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[st] amassed a strong showing of competitors who put on one of the event’s biggest spectacles. Shortly after its explosive Grand Finals, Aksys Games and French Bread took to the stage to announce the next chapter in the anime fighter’s saga.

Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[cl-r] (henceforth known as UNiCLR because no likey type mouthfuls) will introduce a whole slew of additions to the game, including a brand new character.

Londrekia, who’s oddly similar to BlazBlue’s Jin Kisaragi, is a swordsman filled with grace in his steps and ice in his attacks. Touted as an easy to get into fighter yet appealing to higher-level veterans, Londrekia employs his ice abilities to freeze his opponents and deal devastating damage.

On top of this new fighter, UNiCLR will include balance changes and new moves for the existing extensive roster and will be dropping sometime next year.

New fates will cross in BlazBlue Crosstag Battle Version 2.0

BBTAG’s next universe has been teased and speculated on multiple times and the EVO 2019 announcement did more than reveal it as the game will be entering Version 2.0 with not one but nine new characters, four of which were revealed.

First up, Senran Kagura Estival Versus’s Yumi enters the fray. With her fan and energy attacks, this bodacious Japanese-kimono wearing beauty brings an air of elegance to the clash of universes. Up next, another fate bursts into battle as Akatsuki and Blitztank from Akatsuki Blitzkampf make their unexpected debut. Seriously, nobody expected the tank but here we are.

The biggest surprise, though, came when the iconic music track of RWBY fandom’s favorite villain started playing halfway through the trailer. Neo Politan was revealed in true BBTAG fashion, looking stylish and endlessly cool as always.

There are five more fighters that are yet to be revealed so we’ll be keeping our ears to the ground all the way until Version 2.0 released on November 21st.

Soul Calibur VI x Samurai Shodown: It’s happening

The crossover that needed to happen a million times already is finally happening as Bandai Namco announced the last fighter for season 1 and the introduction of season 2 of its highly acclaimed weapon-based fighting game.

The Athenian warrior, Cassandra, was shown off as the remaining character for Soul Calibur VI’s first season. All of her moves, complete with the iconic butt slam are all intact along with a few new tricks up her half-toga which you can experience as of the time of this post!

Season 2 is of Soul Calibur VI was also revealed at EVO 2019 which will bring four new fighters along with some rebalances and moves for the cast and a couple of new mechanics to the game. Out of the four characters coming for season 2, one was revealed to be a guest character in none other than Haohmaru from Samurai Shodown. No gameplay was shown off but the reveal itself was enough to send tournament goers into a hyped-up frenzy. There’s no release date for season 2 or Haohmaru yet.

Tekken 7 gets a Third Season

Soul Calibur VI wasn’t the only game Bandai Namco had to talk about as the ever-iconic King of Iron First Tournament is set to be receiving another set of additional combatants. Season 3 will kick off with the deeply missed Zafina who now seems to have a demonic claw upgrade to go with her stance-shifting trickery.

A new original character will also be joining the four-character season pass roster. His name is Leroy Smith, a martial arts master hailing from New York who’s out for revenge, who employs the Wing Chun Chinese martial art with its rapid-fire series of blocks and attacks.

The Season 3 Pass will be available this September and will also include additional features, an expanded practice mode, new moves and balance changes for the existing roster and a new stage.

Janemba and Gogeta Join Dragonball FighterZ

Thought we were done with Bandai Namco? Not quite yet as two additional fighters will be joining the extensive roster of Goku...eh...Dragonball Fighterz. Janemba has been a long-awaited fan favorite and looks to be quite unique.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a DBFZ reveal without another incarnation of Goku. Gogeta is the dance fusion of Goku and Vegeta and he comes in his Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan form.

Janemba is slated for an August 8th release while Gogeta will arrive sometime in the future.

SNK is heating up

Originally revealed to have a first season of four characters, SNK revealed at EVO 2019 that their iconic samurai fighter Samurai Shodown would be receiving five characters, one for each month between now and December, starting with Rimururu sometime this month. The new addition to the season pass roster, Shizumaru Hisame, will be released for free in September.

SNK also revealed Samurai Shodown will be receiving a second season in 2020 beginning with fan (and yours truly’s!) favorite Mina Majikina.

The popular studio wasn’t done yet, though, as it also revealed that The King of Fighters XV is also currently in development. No other details have been revealed but we will definitely be on the lookout.

Heaven or Hell Returns

Finally, Arc System Works cheekily asked that people remained tuned for yet another reveal and they delivered onto us the greatest of announcements. A new Guilty Gear is in development, slated for a 2020 release. As you can see in the trailer, the game is running in a modified version of the one ArcSys is using in the current Guilty Gear games and DBFZ.

It’s looking absolutely stunning and we can’t wait for more information as it comes.

And that’s a wrap! EVO just keeps getting more and more hype with each passing year and the announcements are no exception. We will bemonitoring the airwaves for more fighting game goodness so stick around here at The Digital Fix.
