Capcom Unveils Project Resistance at Tokyo Game Show

For a few weeks now, Capcom had been throwing out breadcrumb teases for a new Resident Evil project. At Tokyo Game Show earlier this week, those teases have culminated to the unveiling of Project Resistance, an asymmetric 4v1 multiplayer experience set in the Resident Evil universe. The game, currently in development for Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Steam, is being touted as bringing together “cooperative and competitive dynamics, with the opportunity for players to create their own survival horror experience”. Social media denizens have been comparing it to Left 4 Dead but it seems to sound an awful lot like games in the same vein as Dead by Daylight and Friday the 13th the Game.

Matches pit four player controller survivors against a single player who is the Mastermind, the latter of which seems to be what differentiates Project Resistance from other games in the subgenre. Masterminds control the field by monitoring through hallway cameras and unleashing traps and enemies through a set of cards. Beyond making survivors’ lives living hell, Masterminds can also take direct control of zombies and even take on the role of the staple trenchcoated terror of the franchise, Tyrant.

Survivors, on the other hand, seem to be more in line with other asymmetric horror games in that they must work together to survive and fend off the Mastermind’s mischief. Each survivor will have his or her own set of perks and abilities which can be used strategically to help each other achieve victory.

Capcom has stated that there will be an opportunity to play an early access build of the game at the Tokyo Game Show. There will also be a closed beta in which Xbox Insider members and RE Ambassadors will be eligible for a chance to participate. Registration for the Project Resistance beta will open between September 11th and 18th and is slated to run from October 4th to the 7th. There will surely be more news to come and as usual, we will be keeping an eye out so stay tuned here to The Digital Fix.
