Crackdown 3 - Microsoft's last tentpole Xbox One exclusive of 2018 won't be released in 2018

Platforms: Microsoft Xbox One

Microsoft have confirmed that Crackdown 3 will not be released on the Xbox One this year. This is disappointing news given that it was the third and final first-party major exclusive planned for the console this year. Three exclusives in one year is already a poor showing and we're now in June with both remaining games already having been released to lukewarm reviews.

In a statement to Kotaku, a Microsoft spokesman said “Our fans’ response to the signature antics and explosive gameplay of Crackdown 3 has been incredible. To ensure we deliver the experience they deserve, Crackdown 3 will be launching in Feb 2019. We look forward to sharing more on Crackdown 3 this Sunday during the Xbox E3 2018 briefing.”

In order to shift consoles, exclusives are not a luxury - they're a requirement and it seems its an area that Microsoft are really struggling to deliver in. So far this year, both Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 have delivered experiences that were flawed and both were released on the Xbox Game Pass subscription service meaning their actual sales are likely to have been on the low side too. Other major platform exclusives have been cancelled in recent months including the exciting Scalebound. When the Playstation 4 has exclusives such as God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn to shout about it's hardly surprising to see that Sony's console is now pretty much unbeatable in terms of users.

Microsoft may have the most powerful console in the market with the Xbox One X, but this is never going to be enough to convince the vast majority of gamers who can only afford one system to chose the one with the fewest and least impressive exclusives.
