Atari VCS 'Pre-Orders' Open Today at 2PM BST

The Atari VCS is something that has been bubbling away for some time - we've never really known quite what it is; we know it'll play retro Atari games and Atari tell us that it will also be a modern gaming platform.

The system will run on a Linux OS, is being targeted at indie developers and, according to Atari's Michael Arzt, will be on a par with a mid-range PC.

As an old school Atari fan the Atari VCS is something I'd love to see do well, but it's a very tough sell in a difficult market. It certainly has the look down to a tee with the mahogany highlights and beautiful retro controllers but our concern is over whether this can be anything more than the next OUYA.

Pre-orders open in a few hours (2PM GMT) via Crowdfunding site Indiegogo with devices expected to be initially sold for $199 before jumping to $299 when the initial batch of discounted consoles is all allocated.
