Metal Gear Solid HD Collection

On February 3rd next year Konami will release the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360. This is a landmark series that provides some of the finest stealth games ever made with unrivalled attention to detail. Few developers have ever become household names in the way Hideo Kojima has and this reflects just how important and influential his games have been in setting the standard for how cinematic games can be.

According to the press release and the game box itself the HD Collection includes Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and a conversion of the PSP game Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. However, this is a bit misleading and it is better to think of the Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater games in this collection as their Substance and Subsistence versions with a few missing features.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence were special edition versions of the original games with added features and modes. For example, the 5 Snake Tales, the 350 VR missions and 150 alternate missions from Substance are included in the HD Collection. While Konami’s Evolution Skateboarding inspired mode and the Document of Metal Gear Solid content did not make it into this release.

Some of the additional content from Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence has been removed but it is understandable why Metal Gear Online is no longer present since Konami stopped supporting it back in 2007. The Existence content from the limited edition has also gone but this isn’t really missed because you can still view all the cutscenes in the Demo Theatre mode.

More importantly however, this version of Metal Gear Solid 3 includes the new user-controlled 3D camera and the MSX versions of the 8 bit games Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. Unfortunately, the addictive Snake Vs Monkey mode didn’t make it into the collection, supposedly because of Ape Escape licensing issues bringing it to the Xbox 360.

I have been fortunate enough to get the North American version of the HD Collection which was released in November and these games have never looked so good. The Digital Fix will have a full review of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for you just before the February 3rd release date.
