PlayStation 5 confirmed for Holiday 2020 - haptic adaptive controller, 4K Blu-ray player and hardware based raytracing confirmed

Platforms: Sony PlayStation 5

Sony have confirmed that the PlayStation 5 will be appearing under televisions from next Christmas in a new blog post on the official Playstation site.

The news item from SIE President Jim Ryan also reveals there will be a new controller with haptic technology and adaptive triggers released alongside the next generation console.

The announcement was also backed up with an exclusive story on Wired that went into more details on what we can expect.

One interesting aspect in the Wired story was the confirmation that raytracing would be provided via hardware, not a software solution as some had speculated. Also confirmed is that it will be mandatory for all games installed on the console's SSD due to the performance difference between that and optical media.

The controller will feature adaptive triggers that can offer varying levels of resistance depending on the activity depicted on screen - resistance can increase, when for example, the player is pulling back on a bow and it can also provide noticeable differences in feeling between guns within the same game.

The Wired article also confirms earlier rumours about the look of the dev kit - although there was no confirmation that this would be the final consumer product appearance.

Other new information we have is that the new PlayStation will include a 4K Blu-ray drive that will be able to act as a 4K Blu-ray player for film fans and physical games will be sold on 100GB optical discs. The controller will connect via USB Type-C for charging and will be heavier than the existing DualShock 4.

The confirmation that the console would be arriving next Christmas isn't a surprise and it will hit the market at approximately the same time as Microsoft's next Xbox - traditionally the big two consoles have had staggered releases so having them so close together could give us a good early idea which will take the lead in the next generation.
