New Features Revealed for Football Manager 2020

Platforms: All

With the release date of Football Manager 2020 being just around the corner, fans have been eager to learn more about the upcoming game and what new features it will be bringing to the table. As the November 2019 window draws ever closer, Sports Interactive and SEGA have recently revealed what’s in store feature-wise for the long-running sports management series’ next iteration. There seems to be a lot to be excited about as the game’s design focuses on long-term planning and development to make saves for multiple seasons more compelling. Let’s dive in!

For starters, Football Manager 2020 will be introducing the Development Centre, a central hub where players can manage their team’s growth from budding young footballers to superstars. According to the press release, managers will be able to take “full control of their youth team operations in this all-encompassing hub.” This hub will provide all sorts of information that managers need at a glance so that they can make decisions on training, trades, and other operations more easily. Players that are the “ones to watch” will also be highlighted. It sounds like a spreadsheet on steroids so hopefully data junkies will be getting a kick out of it, too.

Beyond the Development Centre, managers will also be able to establish and nurture their own Club Vision. Plotting a course by working with a club’s staff, its players, and their board will allow for the development of a culture that will add a long-term goal that spans across multiple seasons. This means that a club in Football Manager 2020 won’t just be judged by its standing in the league but also on “other factors such as whether you’re adhering to the club’s culture or hitting the milestones of the board’s five-year plan”. These ambitions will all be laid out during Welcome Meetings which will be presented to managers during their first day before they even get to their inbox and will be taking place in the new boardroom environment.

On top of managing a club’s overall development and vision, managers will have even more control over individual players’ growth through Playing Time Pathways. This new feature in Football Manager 2020 will allow managers to define for each player “a clear pathway from Fringe Player to Star Player and everything in between”. This is accomplished by making playing time greatly affect a player’s standing within the club. Through proposed playing times, managers can promise clear playing times for their players. Keeping track of discrepancies and ensuring the agreed-upon playing time will also be possible with backroom staff providing managers with advice on how to proceed before each match.

Speaking of backroom staff, they’re also getting some love in Football Manager 2020 by having even more functionality with more points of advice for managers and squad suggestions among other enhancements that will simulate a more real-life backroom staff experience.

All these features aside, SEGA and Sports Interactive are both touting Football Manager 2020 as the best looking FM to date with tons of graphical upgrades and improvements, including weather effects being more prominent in this upcoming iteration.

There’s a lot to look forward to in Football Manager 2020 when it releases on November 2019. We’ll be looking out for more information as it gets revealed so stay tuned here to The Digital Fix.
