Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer revealed - 100 player maps, open beta detailed, crossplay across all platformsPlatforms: Sony PlayStation 4 | Microsoft Xbox One | PC
Activision has revealed extensive details about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's multiplayer modes, including support for 100 player maps and dates for the open beta, ahead of its much-anticipated release on October 25th.
Check out the multiplayer reveal trailer below, and try not to get put off by the outdated choice of music.
Let's begin with the news of the beta, which will go live on September 12th-13th for players who preorder the game on PlayStation 4. An open beta will go live for all PS4 players on September 14th-16th.
Interestingly, there will be separate betas for testing the crossplay support that was previously announced for the game. For players who preorder the game on Xbox One and PC, and anyone on PS4, the crossplay test beta will go live on September 19th-20th. The open beta crossplay test will go live on all platforms on September 21st-23rd.
Regarding the multiplayer you'll be diving into in the beta, developer Infinity Ward has revealed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's multiplayer will redefine the COD multiplayer that players are used to. While nothing announced so far, or shown in the trailer, necessarily corroborates that lofty statement, there are some interesting new gameplay mechanics that make for more tactical multiplayer. As seen in the trailer, night vision goggles, door breaching, gun mounting, and bullet penetration have been added to the game. How these additions into the fast-paced multiplayer of Call of Duty play out in reality remains to be seen, but if they ensure that multiplayer feels a tad more like the single player, then I'm all in.
The developers are promising a complete weapon overhaul and extensive operator customisation with the brand new Gunsmith system. This system, allows players to swap out multiple gun parts to craft your perfect weapon of war.
Returning to the series are many of your classic Call of Duty multiplayer modes, including Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Headquarters. New modes enter the fray too, like a remixed Search and Destroy, Cyber Attack, and Ground War, a large-scale mode that supports more than 100 players. Gunfight, the fast-paced, 2 vs 2, close-quarters combat mode that frankly looks, and sounds, like a blast to play. Modern Warfare will accommodate varying player numbers in its many modes, with 2 vs 2, 6 vs 6, 10 vs 10, and 20 vs 20 battles.
The official Call of Duty YouTube channel streamed for over four hours last night to celebrate the reveal of Modern Warfare's multiplayer, so if you'd like to see how all of the new modes, mechanics, and weapons work, be sure to check that stream out below.
