Pokemon Sword and Shield are coming to Nintendo Switch on 15th November 2019Platforms: Nintendo Switch
In a Nintendo Direct video today, Nintendo pulled back the curtain on the latest generation of Pokemon games.
Pokemon Sword and Shield will launch worldwide on 15th November 2019 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. We also got some exciting details about the titles to help us get through the next five months of waiting.
While Pokemon Sword and Shield will still be built upon the franchise's core tenets of catching and battling Pokemon, these new iterations have some tricks up their sleeves.
For one, Pokemon can shift to a Dynamax form once per battle. This essentially turns those cute Pocket Monsters into Kaiju-sized beasts, and offers them more powerful moves as a result. This effect only lasts for three turns, so players will need to pick their moment - especially since gym leaders have the same option.
These Dynamax forms play into Max Raid battles, a new co-operative activity for online and local players. These require players to team up to weaken Dynamax Pokemon in order to catch them, and while they'll undoubtedly be difficult it is clear that it'll be worth the risk - with more powerful Pokemon available through this method.
These Max Raid battles take place in a new area called "Wild Area". Pokemon found here will vary depending on the weather and time of day, so it'll be worth checking back regularly.
Of course, it wouldn't be a new generation without new Pokemon, and we got a glimpse at a handful. There's Drednaw, Gossifleur, Corviknight and Wooloo, which is essentially a very cute sheep. We also got to see the latest legendary Pokemon, Zacian and Zamazenta. Both look fairly similar, but the former carries a sword while the latter's upper body is essentially a shield.
Pokemon Sword and Shield launch 15th November, and a double pack is available for pre-order too. Perfect for those big co-op Max Raid Battles.
