What We Know About Metroid Prime 4

Platforms: Nintendo Switch

Announced during E3 2017, Metroid Prime 4 was revealed with just a logo. No gameplay was shown, nothing about the developers was shared, we didn’t get a release date, nor any information about the story or setting. Fast forward two years, and we’re still none the wiser.

So, what do we actually know?

Shortly after the initial reveal, rumours started circulating that the game was being developed by Bandai Namco rather than Retro Studios, who worked on the previous three entries in the series. This was later confirmed by Eurogamer in early 2018, with the only other confirmed details at the time being that it would continue in the first-person format, as per its prequels, and that Kensuke Tanabe, the producer and co-producer of the previous three entries would also be returning.

Following its initial reveal, the game disappeared from Nintendo’s Directs, much to fans’ annoyance and disbelief. However, earlier this year, Nintendo broke the silence by revealing that Metroid Prime 4’s development wasn’t meeting their expectations, and that the development would be stopped, scrapped and restarted from scratch, with Retro Studies taking the helm. Now, while we’re pleased that the Retro Studios are returning to pilot the development, what it means is that sadly the game is probably a good few years away from release. What’s more, Retro has recently started recruiting for roles to help them with development, again indicating that the release date is years away!

So, what happens next?

We are hopeful that Nintendo will discuss Metroid Prime 4 in its presentation at this year’s E3, even if it is just to reveal the game’s real name, but we’re not banking on anything at the moment, given that the development has already been extremely rocky. Nevertheless, what we wouldn’t be surprised to see announced at this year’s E3 is a heavily-rumoured HD port of the critically-acclaimed Metroid Prime Trilogy on the Switch, which, will make the long wait for Metroid Prime 4 just that little bit easier.

What we can say for sure is that Samus is returning, she’s just going to take a little longer!
