Fortnite - Switch crossplay options may have not been dropped despite reports

Platforms: Nintendo Switch

The most recent patch for Fortnite has made changes to Crossplay that will affect Switch owners, however it appears some major sources have misconstrued these notes and are reporting that crossplay with Xbox One and Playstation 4 players has been dropped. Our understanding is that it hasn't.

The patch includes the following statement:

Combined Mobile and Switch pools.

Before, Switch players were combined with Xbox One and PS4 cross-play parties

Fortnite 8.10 Patch Notes

This suggests that changes have been made to move Switch players into the mobile pool - something that makes some sense given the Switch experience is quite close to that of mobile devices in terms of performance. This doesn't exclude them from cross play with other consoles when in a party that crosses devices, but means that Switch players will not be matched more generally with Xbox and Playstation players. This should lead to a more level battlefield - although mobile players may not think so when going up against their thumbstick powered rivals.

There's nothing preventing crossplay across all devices anywhere else in the notes and post update Switch players are still reporting the ability to play with their Xbox One and PS4 owning friends.

Other introductions in the most recent patch include a brand new vehicle - the Baller which includes a grappling hook and one use free vending machines which dispense one weapon before disappearing.
