The 2005 Oscar winners

It was Clint Eastwood’s night as Million Dollar Baby won big at the Oscars, scooping Best Picture, Best Actress for Hilary Swank, Best Supporting Actor for Morgan Freeman and Best Director for Eastwood himself. As expected, Jamie Foxx won Best Actor for Ray, while Cate Blanchett picked up Best Supporting Actress for playing Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator. Full results here.

Million Dollar Baby

The 77th Academy Awards ceremony was always going to be a tug of war between Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood. The Aviator and Million Dollar Baby were the clear favourites from the beginning. As it turned out, it was Eastwood who emerged victorious. Although The Aviator actually won the most awards (5), they were largely technical ones and it was Million Dollar Baby that walked off with the major trophies. The boxing drama took Best Picture while Clint Eastwood and Hilary Swank each won their second Oscars in the Best Director and Best Actress categories and Morgan Freeman won his first for Best Supporting Actor. The Aviator had to be content with Best Supporting Actress for Cate Blanchett, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.

In what everyone agreed was a foregone conclusion, Jamie Foxx scooped Best Actor for his uncanny portrayal of soul singer Ray Charles in the biopic Ray, which also won Best Sound Design. Other winners in the major categories included Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and Sideways which won, respectively, Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay and the Spanish drama, The Sea Inside which won the Best Foreign Language Film award.

The Incredibles won Best Animated Feature, along with Best Sound Editing. In the music categories, Finding Neverland won Best Original Score and The Motorcycle Diaries took Best Song. The Visual Effects Oscar went to Spider-Man 2 while Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events triumphed in the Best Make-Up category.

The Feature Length Documentary prize went to Born Into Brothels, a film about the children of Calcutta’s red light district and the statuette for Best Short Documentary was won by the civil rights tale, Mighty Times: The Children’s March. In the two other short film categories, Best Live Action Short was won by Wasp and Best Animated Short went to Ryan.
