X-Men: Dark Phoenix trailer: Jean Grey is spiralling out of control

Simply titled Dark Phoenix in the US, the film is being called X-Men: Dark Phoenix everywhere else. In a further sign that studios are looking at how superhero films can be taken more seriously and receive award recognition (see Black Panther), the latest film in the franchise has been described as "more of a drama" by Cyclops star Tye Sheridan and "a little less operatic" by director Simon Kinberg. The film has been subject to delays and re-shoots which isn't a great sign but with such a strong cast and less action on the cards you can only hope it works out. Watch the first trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix above to get a first look.

In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain.

With Jean spiralling our of control and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite - not only to save Jean's soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponise this force and rule the galaxy.

Simon Kinberg jumps into the directors chair for the first time (quite the debut!) with the cast starring Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Sophie Turner, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Evan Peters, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Alexandra Shipp.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix opens in the UK on February 5th 2019.
