WTF casting announcement of the year - Johnny Depp in Fantastic Beasts sequel
There are few casting decisions that raise an eyebrow like this one, and had it been announced a few months ago it could have almost been expected but the news that Johnny Depp has been cast to co-star in the first Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them sequel really has us confused. There's no doubt that his quirky performance could fit in well with the Potterverse but the timing of this announcement so soon after the fallout from the acrimonious split with Amber Heard and the accusations of abuse doesn't feel right.
Fantastic Beasts creator, J.K.Rowling has been a vocal speaker and activist for women's rights. She is also the person with the most control over any adaptations of her work outside of the director so it would seem that for ANYONE to be cast in a film based on her universe she would a) be consulted and b) be HAPPY. That's why we're so surprised and utterly stumped by the news; that said ultra-right wing Jon Voight is cast in the first film so there IS precedent for controversial casting in the series already.
Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them stars Eddie Redmayne, Samantha Morton and Ezra Miller and is directed by David Yates, it arrives in UK cinemas on 18th November. It has recently been revealed that there will be FIVE films in the Beasts series, the first of which is set in America and the second is expected to be in France.
