White Boy Rick trailer: It's Matthew McConaughey vs the War on Drugs

After building a decent reputation on TV directing shows like Secret Diary of a Call Girl and Top Boy, filmmaker Yann Demange made a reasonably strong debut with the Jack O'Connell-led '71. His new film, White Boy Rick, stars Matthew McConaughey in the lead role and looks like it could be aimed towards the Oscars next year, although the trailer makes it look quite a generic story. Watch the trailer for White Boy Rick and see what you make of it.

Set in 1980s Detroit at the height of the crack epidemic and the War on Drugs, the film is based on the moving true story of a blue-collar father and his teenage son, Rick Wershe Jr., who became an undercover police informant and later a drug dealer, before he was abandoned by his handlers and sentenced to life in prison.

Richie Merritt, Bel Powley, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Brian Tyree Henry, Rory Cochrane, RJ Cyler, Jonathan Majors, Eddie Marsan, Bruce Dern and Piper Laurie all feature in the support cast.

White Boy Rick comes to UK cinemas on December 7th 2018.
