Tartan Video have announced the UK DVD release of When The Last Sword Is Drawn for 25th April 2005 priced at £22.99. Set at the end of the 19th century, at the time of the Shinsengumi, the guardians of the imperial capital, Yoshimura is their top swordsman. With famine affecting much of North Japan, he has abandoned his family in order to pursue a potentially more rewarding job. Despite his good intentions, this seemingly mercenary attitude loses him favour with his fellow Samurai. Bur as civil war threatens these final days of the imperial empire, Yoshimura defensd the clan against government troops, never losing sight of his warrior spirit.
Yojiro Takita’s When The Last Sword Is Drawn offers a stylish, evocative drama highlighting a period lost in history and seeped in blood. The story unfolds through multiple-narratives from clan and family members. It won all the Japan Film Academy’s major awards, including best film, best actor and best supporting actor. It marks a continual revival of fascination in Samurai films such as The Last Samurai and Twilight Samurai.
