Watch Oscar-nominated short documentary In the Absence
It's a sad fact of life that many of us move on quite quickly from the disasters shown to us through the media. Often it comes down to documentarians to remind us of past tragedies and South Korean director Seung-jun Yi's In The Absence looks back at the 2014 sinking of the MV Sewol passenger ferry that saw 300 people (mostly children) lose their lives. It first appeared at the DOC NYC festival in 2018 and marks the first Academy nomination for the director, with this being his fourth short film in total. In The Absence will appear in the Short Term Documentary section at the Oscars this Sunday and you can watch it in full below.
When the passenger ferry MV Sewol sank off the coast of South Korea in 2014, over three hundred people lost their lives, most of them schoolchildren. Years later, the victims’ families and survivors are still demanding justice from national authorities.
